Yesterday was the first day of Fall. After having lived in Houston for over twenty years, I still expect that to mean cooler weather and the beginnings of brightly-colored leaves. But no. This evening, a mosquito got into my apartment and was buzzing around my kitchen trying to get a meal from me. That is not very Fall like, folks!
It’s still hot outside – we’re in the mid-80s to low-90s – and the humidity persists. Down here on the Gulf Coast, we probably won’t get a break until some time in November.
True, I have traded this for the luxury of not having to shovel my car out of a snow drift in the middle of January. Still, it’s a bit annoying to have to wait so long to get some relief from the hot, muggy stew that is Houston.
The big disappointment is Halloween. It’s supposed to be chilly outside. That’s just the way it should be. Down here, though, it’s usually just as warm as usual. I have to admit that having grown up in a cooler climate, it puts a bit of a damper on the holiday for me when October 31 comes around and it’s still shorts and t-shirt weather.
Yep. It’s Fall again. Whether it feels like it or not.
